Understanding MERV Ratings
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It measures how effectively a filter traps particles.
MERV 1–4
Basic filtration, usually fiberglass. They catch large particles but let smaller dust and allergens through.
MERV 5–8
Good for most residential homes. They trap mold spores, hairspray, and dust mites.
MERV 9–11
High efficiency. These are excellent for homes with pets or residents with allergies, as they trap fine dust and pet dander.
Common Residential Air Filter Sizes
Air filters are measured in three dimensions: length, width, and thickness. The size you need depends on your specific HVAC system. Here are the most common sizes we encounter in Las Vegas homes:
Standard 1-inch filters are the most common and include sizes like 16x20x1, 16x25x1, 20x20x1, 20x25x1, and 14x20x1. These thinner filters typically need replacement every 30 to 90 days depending on your home environment.
Two-inch filters (measured as 16x20x2, 20x20x2, etc.) offer more filtration surface area than standard one-inch options, which means they can capture more particles before becoming clogged. These generally last slightly longer between changes.
Four-inch pleated filters are becoming increasingly popular in newer Las Vegas homes. Common sizes include 16x25x4 and 20x25x4. These thicker filters provide excellent filtration and typically last three to six months.
Larger whole-house air cleaner systems may use filters ranging from 16x25x6 up to 20x25x12. These substantial filters can often last six months to a year depending on conditions.
